COYOTE'S CALL

She works all day in a small cafe

At the edge of town

She lives with her kids in a little house

Where the river turns 'round

She makes do, there's not much new

She's learned how to mend

She's given up waiting at the post office

For the checks he never sends

Sometimes she'll miss him

Most times not at all

Especially when the birthdays come and go

And he doesn't think to call

But she's not got time for loneliness

No time for anything

She only gets that feeling

When she hears the coyotes sing

They're singing ooo, ooo

That's the sound of a lonely coyote's call

They're singing ooo, ooo

That's the sound of a woman with her back against the wall

The furniture is thread bare

But the kitchen floor is clean

There's a yellow stray that came and stayed

He scratches on the screen

And the paycheck doesn't go too far

The last few days are hard

But at least there is a roof overhead

And the kids have a got a yard

And she'll sometimes think of leaving

But she knows she never will

But she can't help thinking freedom

When there's coyotes on the hill

They're singing ooo, ooo

That's the sound of a lonely coyote's call

They're singing ooo, ooo

That's the sound of a woman with her back against the wall

And she only gets lonely when she sees

Lovers walking in the night

And that's when she'll dream of dancing slow

With someone to hold her tight

But she'll end up on her back porch

Where the stars pierce through the black

And that's the nights when the coyotes howl

That she'll be howling back

She's singing ooo, ooo

That's the sound of a lonely coyote's call

She's singing ooo, ooo

That's the sound of a woman with her back against the wall

That's the sound of a woman with her back against the wall
